That's not a typo. The iShares Silver Trust ($SLV) more than doubled, crushing gold (+66%) and the S&P 500 (+17%).

But here's the problem for most investors...

You saw the move. You maybe even caught part of it. But do you actually know why it happened?

Was it the Fed? Industrial demand from solar? A physical squeeze? Retail mania like the 2021 episode?

This works especially well with commodities where flows data is public and price is driven by identifiable macro + physical factors.

Our AI deep research gave us something most Wall Street reports don't: a ranked driver breakdown with fact vs inference separation.

Here's how AI ranked what actually drove silver's 144% move:

Silver's squeeze has been fundamental driven:

Solar panels: 2025 saw another all-time high in global PV installations. Silver paste is essential for cell conductivity.
EVs: Each electric vehicle uses up to ~2 oz of silver (batteries, electronics, contacts). China's EV production kept growing.
Electronics: 5G infrastructure, semiconductors, and consumer devices all require silver.

This industrial demand (~665 Moz in 2025) is what's creating the structural deficit. Unlike gold, silver actually gets consumed. And with green tech buildout accelerating globally, this demand floor isn't going away.

But here's the nuance AI surfaced: high prices are triggering thrifting.

Solar manufacturers are already using less silver per cell. Industrial demand only grew modestly despite record installations because efficiency gains offset volume. The Silver Institute noted photovoltaic demand dropped ~5% purely from thrifting at these prices.

This is the self-limiting dynamic to watch. At $80+ silver, every industrial user is incentivized to engineer around it.

The retail vs institutional split was surprising.

Unlike the 2021 WallStreetBets squeeze that fizzled, 2025's move was institutionally driven:

U.S. Mint coin sales were subdued
Bar/coin demand dropped to 182 Moz (7-year low)
Western retail holders were net sellers taking profits
Meanwhile, hedge funds built record futures positions and ETFs added ~$7-10B

One exception: Chinese retail speculation spiked in December, pushing Shanghai premiums to records. But globally, institutions ran this rally.

Bottom line from the analysis:

The move was real (supply deficit + institutional flows + industrial demand), not froth
Green tech demand creates a structural floor... but thrifting at high prices is the counterbalance
Retail wasn't the driver .... is there more room for froth?
Real yields are the key variable for staying in or getting out
